It is believed that around the year of 1600, rabbits have been brought to the island for hunting purpose. Since then the population of rabbits on Norderney has increased so much that it exceeds the number of human island inhabitants significantly. While on the inhabited island area they are a burden to the island inhabitants because of their tunneled dikes — or gardens — they act as unwanted landscape architects in the national park, however: Their natural activities shape the landscape and enable the establishment of certain plant and bird species that the controlling influence of humans would make impossible. Inconspicuously, they move around the island. What remains for the viewer are traces. Fragments of an existence that reveal themselves as soon as one directs the gaze to the detail.
